The City of Toronto is challenging residents to think big by sharing their ideas of how technology could improve their lives as part of the city’s application for the federal Smart Cities Challenge. A pan-Canadian competition open to communities of all sizes, the Smart Cities Challenge encourages communities to improve the lives of their residents through innovation, data and connected technology, with a grand prize of up to $50 million to support the planning and development of new smart city initiatives.
“The City has done a lot of work to leverage data and technology to help improve the quality of life in Toronto,” says Mayor John Tory in a statement. “The Smart Cities Challenge provides us with an incredible opportunity to help make Toronto a smarter city. We want the public to share their ideas for how we can solve big challenges and improve Toronto for everyone.”
Toronto has been focused on implementing Smart City technology and solutions since 2016, as noted in the “Getting it Right: How Smart City Technology Will Change the Game for Canada’s Largest Metropolis” article in Greybrook Magazine. The city is encouraging people to participate in a short survey on their website, with the option of submitting a formal proposal for those with a more detailed smart city solution in mind.
