The long-awaited ION light rail service is set to commence operations this Friday, June 21st. The integrated transit service will run from Kitchener’s Fairview Park Mall to Conestoga Mall in Waterloo along a route of 19 stations between Kitchener-Waterloo’s downtown core. Part of the Grand River Transit system, ION will reduce travel times, improve accessibility, and ultimately enhance the rider experience for those commuting in the Kitchener/ Waterloo area. This continuous LRT system will provide seamless transit across the region’s three urban centres to future residents of Greybrook’s Cambridge and Kitchener projects.
Part of a multi-stage plan aimed to move people efficiently, comfortably, and conveniently, this marks the completion of the first phase of upgrades. Phase 2 will see the ION LRT extend out to downtown Cambridge, offering enhanced connectivity for residents in the region. With the Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo area being the second fastest growing census metropolitan area in Canada, steps towards managing the areas growth have become vitally important.
