The 6th Annual Velo Blu charity ride returned to Peller Estates Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake on September 19th, once again demonstrating the power of community commitment to life-changing medical research. This year’s inspiring event raised $360,000, bringing Velo Blu’s cumulative contribution to over $2 million toward gene therapy breakthroughs for rare genetic diseases.
What started as a grassroots effort has grown into something truly remarkable. To date, the Blu Genes Foundation has raised more than $4 million for groundbreaking gene-editing research, with Velo Blu contributing over half of that total. This year’s $360,000 achievement reflects the growing momentum behind a cause that is making a real difference for families facing rare diseases.
A highlight of this year’s event was hearing directly from Dr. Heather Grey Edwards and Dr. Miguel Sena Estevez, whose passion and persistence in advancing Tay-Sachs research toward clinical trials and eventual FDA approvals reminded everyone why this mission matters so deeply. Their work at SickKids Hospital, using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology to develop potential cures for Tay-Sachs disease, represents a fundamental shift from managing symptoms to pursuing complete disease elimination.
This groundbreaking approach targets genetic mutations at their source, with implications that extend well beyond individual conditions, potentially unlocking treatments for numerous genetic disorders. For the first time, families have something they’ve never had before: real hope for real treatments.
As lead sponsors of Velo Blu 2025 and committed members of the Blu Genes Foundation, Greybrook remains deeply invested in this transformative work. We extend sincere appreciation to every rider, supporter, volunteer, and sponsor who made this event possible. Together, we are proving that hope, progress, and impact are possible when community comes together for a cause.
