Elias Vamvakas was a visionary entrepreneur and co-founder of Greybrook whose leadership, values, and belief in people helped define the firm’s identity and enduring culture. From the outset, he played a foundational role in shaping Greybrook into a respected private equity platform spanning real estate and health care—one grounded in disciplined execution, long-term thinking, and an unwavering commitment to integrity.
More than two decades ago, Elias helped establish Greybrook with the conviction that great organizations are built not only on performance, but on principled decision-making and trusted partnerships. Even as the firm grew in scale and sophistication, he remained deeply focused on “doing what is right,” inspiring a spirit of entrepreneurship and accountability in everyone around him. He was widely regarded as a mentor who recognized potential, built leaders, and guided teams with wisdom, approachability, and uncommon generosity.
That philosophy was forged through an extraordinary entrepreneurial journey. Elias began his professional career in financial services, where he developed the sales discipline, strategic judgment, and resilience that would become hallmarks of his leadership. He later rose to become President of Creative Planning Financial Group before turning his focus to building companies of his own.
In 1992, Elias co-founded TLC Vision with Dr. Jeffrey Machat and went on to lead the company as CEO and President. Under his stewardship, TLC became North America’s largest provider of laser vision correction, scaling to more than 100 clinics and, at its peak it was the largest, publicly traded Canadian Healthcare company. His entrepreneurial impact extended across health care and beyond through the founding and leadership of businesses including Occulogix and TearLab, and later through the co-founding of Greenbrook TMS Neurohealth Centers—helping bring treatment to tens of thousands of patients across the United States while advancing the company’s mission with clarity, warmth, and resolve.
Elias’s achievements earned national and international recognition, including Canada’s Top 40 Under 40, a Presidential Medal of Honor from the Illinois College of Optometry, and Ernst & Young’s Canadian Entrepreneur of the Year award.
Elias passed away on July 11, 2024, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. His example—of bold building, principled leadership, and genuine care for people—continues to guide Greybrook’s culture and moral compass. His legacy lives on through the many individuals, organizations, and communities he helped grow.
