With the Bank of Canada (BoC) front-loading interest rate increases to address inflation, we have seen the central bank’s policy rate increase from 0.25% in January 2022 to 3.25% in September 2022, and it is widely expected that the BoC will continue its tightening cycle raising rates another 50 to 75 basis points by the end of the year. This rapid increase has of course had a dampening effect on the real estate market and has implications for the development industry and the supply of new homes.
