The Province of Ontario recently announced the extension of the West Toronto Railpath trail to King Street West, providing future residents of the nearby Lower JCT. development with easier and safer pedestrian/cycling access to the downtown core.
Currently the Railpath runs along the rail tracks from north of Annette Street to south of Dundas Street, and the extension is expected to travel south east across the Dufferin Street Bridge and through the new Dufferin-Peel Park. “This future park will be a hub for West Toronto Railpath users, including cyclists. The park will include cycling amenities, seating, terraces oriented towards the west and a lookout,” Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca told reporters at the press conference for the announcement.
Five dedicated bridges have been proposed to cross roads and underpasses along the extension to ensure the safety of cyclists along the route. Preliminary designs were shared earlier this year to showcase what the extension could look like, however these designs are likely to change to accommodate the expansion of the Dufferin Street Bridge and other route concerns.
