After the province of Ontario announced $1.2 billion in funding for the Hamilton LRT initiative in 2015, Hamilton city councilors recently voted to amend the project’s environmental report and send to the province for final approval. A series of debates since the initial announcement slowed progress as the city sought to extend the route by an additional three kilometres – further improving transit connections between Hamilton and the rest of the GTA. The province believes that the extension can be completed within the original funding parameters, with provincial Transportation Minister stating, “This is the right project – both for the city and for the wider region.”
