Greybrook is thrilled to be part of one of five development teams with designs shortlisted for the transformation of the Pier 8 lands in Hamilton, Ontario. Detailed design proposals and financial bids for the 5.24 hectare waterfront community will be submitted by the selected teams to the City of Hamilton as part of the next phase of the bidding process. Comprised of Cityzen Development Group, Fernbrook Homes, GFL Environmental and Greybrook Realty Partners Inc., the Waterfront Shores team features designs from award-winning firm KPMB Architects for the mixed-use community comprised of 1,500 residential unit and 13,000 square meters of commercial and institutional space.
The winning proposal for the waterfront promenade portion of Pier 8 was announced in late 2017. Dubbed “Hammer City,” the Forrec Ltd. concept for the public space (see images above) incorporates “materials and features that reflect the marine and industrial heritage of the site, to create a unique sense of place that will become a destination along the Waterfront Trail,” according to the jury which selected the winning submission. The design includes a beach, games terrace, café, playground space, boardwalk, and wetland remediation gardens.
Construction of Hammer City is expected to begin in spring of 2018, coinciding with the jury’s announcement of the winning design for the remaining Pier 8 lands. We will deliver more details regarding Greybrook’s involvement in Pier 8 as we receive them.
