Toronto had a record-breaking year for tourism in 2017 according to figures released last week by Tourism Toronto. Approximately 43.7 million visitors were welcomed to the city last year (a new record) where they spent more than $8.8 billion – an increase of over $700 million from 2016 and the highest total to date. International visitors comprised 5.1 million of the total number of travellers (another record broken), with overseas spending accounting for more than $2 billion for the first time.
“More and more, world travellers are seeing Toronto as an exciting urban destination, and we’re seeing that with both a record number of visitors and visitor spending,” said Johanne Bélanger, President and CEO of Tourism Toronto. “The campaign we launched last year is tapping into that sense of excitement and confidence. Videos from that campaign – ‘The Views are Different Here’ – have now been seen nearly 43 million times.”
As active asset managers of several dozen real-estate development projects within the GTA, we are thrilled to see the city receive the international and domestic recognition it deserves as a global destination.
